Message from IBC Conference Chairman Professor
David Crawford
Dear Colleagues,
As our industry enters another exciting period
of creativity and technological advance, the
IBC2008 conference will as always keep you fully
informed about what is happening around the
world, covering all aspects of multimedia
content creation, management and delivery.
But IBC, of course, is more than just a forum
for learning about latest technologies. IBC is
also about networking – meeting friends, clients
and new contacts. IBC is about gaining insight
into the business models and drivers for new
products and services. IBC is about attracting
young people and start-up enterprises into our
industry. And IBC is about growing our
businesses in a friendly, informative and fun
atmosphere.
Our conference programme format has been
re-crafted this year to provide an even better
range of clearly-defined and well-focused
streams, tailored to the various needs of all
the delegates. Whether you are looking for the
latest from the research labs or a masterclass
in 3D movie-making, IBC will strive to offer you
something most relevant and stimulating.
Leading this approach is the framework of theme
days within the conference programme. Each of
the five theme days includes tutorials,
presentations, panels and workshops,
comprehensively tackling a subject’s issues from
every angle. The themes for 2008 will cover
personalised content over the web; future
broadcast businesses and the changing audience;
the “digital dividend” and the battle for
bandwidth; production and protection of all
types of content including the latest HD
formats; and finally on Monday, driven by recent
significant developments, the theme day will
again cover digital cinema, new standards and
the big screen.
The theme days, of course, are just one strand
in the IBC conference. There are targeted
business briefings, particularly around mobile
multimedia, IPTV and 4th generation
communication systems. The ever-popular
added-value events like What Caught my Eye will
cover both production and mobile exhibits, and
will once more be open to all. As always, there
will be our ever-popular masterclasses and
workshops - last year's memorable session on
creating special effects for the Dr Who
television series was particularly well
received.
Anchoring the whole programme, are the technical
papers sessions. This is where the IBC
conference started, a series of carefully
peer-reviewed papers selected for both their
technical innovation and topicality, to give a
platform for the latest in engineering thought
and practical deployment. I know it is a cliché,
but the IBC conference really does have
something for everyone.
I look forward to welcoming you to IBC2008 in
Amsterdam, where the conference and your
participation starts on Thursday 11 September.
