Official Inauguration of a new European Technology Platform:
The
Integral Satcom Initiative (ISI)
On
February 1, 2006, highest level representatives of
prominent satellite industry companies and
organizations, under the auspices of the European
Commission and of the European Space Agency, will
meet at the Sheraton Brussels Hotel and Towers, in
Brussels, to officially inaugurate a new European
Technology Platform, the “Integral
Satcom Initiative (ISI)”, as part the 7th
Framework Programme (FP7), which will drive European
RTD initiatives in the period 2007-2013.
The
ISI platform is designed to bring together for the
first time in a unified forum all aspects related to
satellite
communications (satcom), including mobile,
broadband,
and broadcasting applications, security
systems and applications, and the integration of
data communications with navigation,
Earth observation and Air
Traffic Management systems.
ISI
is a timely initiative because satellite
communications are recognised to be a strategic sector for Europe,
with significant economic impact and high societal
relevance, as they are instrumental for
European-wide and International broadcasting, mobile
communications, broadband access, bridging the
digital divide, safety, crisis management, disaster
relief, and dual use applications. ISI has the
explicit purpose to foster the entire satcom sector
and positively contribute to several EU policies, in
order to promote European industrial
competitiveness, growth and employment in a
sustainable way, in synergy with National
priorities. Representative sectors of interest for
ISI include ICT, Space, Security,
Transport, Development,
and Environment.
Specific policy initiatives of interest include i2010,
the European
Space Policy, and in general all those
initiatives which can benefit from the existence of
an efficient satellite communications
infrastructure, or which are aimed at the
development of innovative satellite services and
technologies.
Leveraging
on the pioneering work performed since 2001 in the
Task Force on Advanced Satellite Mobile Systems, ISI
brings together all interested stakeholders from
industry, operators, service providers, and research
institutions, which have produced a Strategic Vision Document and Research
Agenda, encompassing technical, regulatory,
standardization, and financial issues. As of today,
ISI enumerates more than 100 participants, belonging
to 17 Countries: Austria, Belgium, France, Germany,
Greece, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Luxemburg, Norway,
Slovenia, South Korea, Spain, Switzerland, Russia,
United Kingdom, and the United States of America.
