Thuraya Announces Launch of Point of Presence (POP) and Meet Me Point (MMP)

3 May 2009

Thuraya Telecommunications Company, a world leading mobile satellite operator, today announced the establishment of a Point Of Presence (POP) and Meet Me Point (MMP) to enhance the performance of its high-speed broadband solution, ThurayaIP, for streaming customers.

Thuraya has deployed the necessary infrastructure to ensure that users of its StreamingIP service have their data well-managed, secured and routed to the end destination with guaranteed service quality.

The POP, located in Thuraya’s Sharjah-based gateway, comprises routers and firewalls to effectively manage all StreamingIP traffic. The MMP is located in Telehouse, London for customers requiring end-to-end dedicated links, and easy data transmission to countries in Europe.

The combined infrastructure provides cost effective interconnect options for industries, such as the broadcast media, which require reliable and secure broadband video streaming services through ThurayaIP, the world’s only satellite IP Modem to support content streaming speeds of up to 384 Kbps.

This service can be extended to all customers requiring dedicated leased line connections for purposes of reliability, security, and other possible applications.

“Our Point of Presence and Meet Me Point deliver end-to-end data transfer that is of the highest quality at affordable rates. Thuraya has the capacity to provide proficient broadband services to any location, which we know is of vital importance to industries which rely heavily on information transmission across the globe,” said Thuraya’s Chief Commercial Officer, Dr. Sven Rohte.

Thuraya launched ThurayaIP in 2008. It is an A-5 sized, compact high-speed data solution that has generated immense interest from Thuraya’s distribution partners and customers, especially those utilizing the solution in remote locations. The company plans to establish more MMPs in key locations across the globe to facilitate accessibility to ThurayaIP network.
