MarineTrack Solution Keeps Round Britain Powerboat Racers Safely on Course

July 31, 2008

SkyWave Mobile Communications, has supplied UK-based MarineTrack, manufacturer of high quality, reliable tracking solutions in the commercial shipping and leisure marine markets, with DMR terminals for integration with their tracking and monitoring solutions. MarineTrack’s solution was recently used to safeguard participants in the 2008 Round Britain Powerboat Race, held in Portsmouth, UK, in June.

Dubbed ‘The Greatest Offshore Powerboat Race of the 21st Century’, the race was a demanding 10-day, 1,600 nautical mile course around the coast of Britain; the first event of its kind in 24 years. With MarineTrack’s sponsorship, the race was tracked by over 120,000 boating enthusiasts from around the world. Each participant’s boat was equipped with a tracking and monitoring application which featured a two-way IsatM2M satellite terminal, giving spectators real-time Web access to racers’ position and overall progress. For participants and spectators alike, what the application ultimately provided was security and peace of mind.

“We had very specific requirements for the Round Britain Race and the MarineTrack system more than satisfied our needs,” says Richard Salaman, Safety Officer for Round Britain Powerboat Race 2008. “It was a brilliant resource for the safety control of the race and an invaluable tool for me, as Safety Officer. It took away the strain of knowing where the boats were and reduced the need for a lot of other extra communication equipment.”

MarineTrack’s satellite-based solution is powered by SkyWave’s integrated DMR-series terminals operating on the SkyWave IsatM2M network service. These ruggedized terminals are suitable for deployment in a wide range of asset security and management applications on land, at sea, or in the air.
